By following a few uncomplicated measures, you can protect your Scratch ticket inventory from theft.

One of the absolute safeguards against Scratch ticket theft, including employee theft, is to use the Lottery’s inventory sheet or one like it of your own design. Use it to perform inventories of activated Scratch tickets at the end of each shift and at closing time.

At a minimum, daily inventories of Scratch tickets should be a matter of owner/management policy. If possible, lock all scratch tickets in a safe during non–business hours. Store Scratch tickets in a secure area that is not accessible to your customers.

With these few extra steps, you can deter would–be ticket thieves and maintain clear control over your Scratch ticket inventory. Too, take into account that by doing this, you are protecting your potential Lottery commissions.
